Achill Island is truly beautiful and breathtaking, its scale is hard to capture in words or even pictures. Its home to five blue flag beaches, a deserted village and the highest sea cliffs in Europe to name but a few. If you are taking part in the Achill 10K or 5k race you can expect some, or all, of the following:
- To run on a Blue Flag beach
- To pass a deserted village
- To be welcomed by the Islanders and made feel at home in a truly special event.
Getting There
Achill Island is located on the west coast of Co Mayo, Ireland, and is accessible only by road. Achill is a four hour drive from Dublin and from Shannon airport, or five to six hours from Belfast. For detailed road travel directions to Achill, please refer to the route finder on the AA Roadwatch Website.
For international visitors, Ireland West Airport Knock provides excellent access and is a 75 minute drive from Achill. This fast-growing regional airport offers flights to and from London’s Stansted, Luton and Gatwick airports as well as Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands and Manchester airports. These services mean that Achill is less than 3 hours away from the UK.
